When you arrange a rental car on line in Europe, there are things you have to know and you have be careful about.
Because there are often “Hidden Cost” that you have to pay at the counter.
I made a short trip to Spain from Germany for 2days. The cost of the rental car through booking.com was 46.5 Euros with full insurance.
But… it was complicated… the Hidden Cost!
When you realize the hidden cost, you are already too late to escape from the situation without paying the additional cost.
This happens… Especially when you book a car through a broker site which compares the prices of the rental cars among different car hires.
When you search a car by providing the location, the date and the length of hire, they will show you the best deals. But…
If the price seems too reasonable, you should be careful.
for example, “additional local service fee” ???
“additional full coverage” ???
unique “fuel policy”
How to avoid these? Do not book through “Broker” on line!!
I have used rental car in Europe 5 times. I have been in the those situations for 2 times, without making any accident or trouble from my side, they charged more than the initial contract I made on line.
At “Broker” site, by paying the money they presented, “Your booking is successfully done with full insurance coverage”… ok I have a car now.
Then, on the day of travel when you go to the counter, they tell you to pay the service fee and the fuel cost in advance…. ???
Also, what they told me this time was… “the insurance you bought from Booking.com(broker) do not cover everything”. “I recommend you to pay another 66 Euros here to make a full coverage with us.”
46.51€ was the initial payment to the broker site, with full insurance.
The lady at the counter presented this note, and told me “the most people take this offer, pay 66 € only, and your car is fully insured.”
With my initial 46 € come with full insurance, why this woman tells me to make another insurance contract with the local car hire?
and why she block 850€ on my credit card, even though I am fully insured.
The broker and the local car hire do not collaborate!
Broker: Service Fee 7.95, Insurance 38.56, Total 46.51
Local Car Hire: Service 31, Fuel pre-purchase 56, total 87 (Hidden Cost!)
Altogether 133€ (full tank fuel pre-purchased)
for 2 days rental car fee in low season… this was very expensive.
On top of that, because I did not agree to take the local full cover offer, the lady told me if there is more than 10mm scratch, they will charge upto 1000€ on my credit card.
She also told me to return the car, one hour earlier than I should, because their service man has to make the complete check on the car.
It sounds almost like a corrupted system that the local car hire charge additional service fee, even after my car hire contract with the broker is done with full insurance. And they pressure me to take their full coverage.
When I refused, they told me to take the full responsibility of the car, and the car I received did not even washed from the last user.
There were 10 scratches and damages which they already recognized, but the damage of the car seems really depends on the service man who counts.
I did not make any damage through the 2 days trip, but they can easily claim something new on the car, because the car itself has scratches all over the body.
133€ contract with feeling of being tricked and not fully insured??? this was expensive car hire contract for 2 days. I hope I do not receive additional unknowing charge on my credit card, and end up fighting with the car hire and the broker…
My first bad experience with a car hire was much Uglier…
Originally, we booked arental car for 2 wks, for about 400 €. We arrived 2 hour later than expected time, when I was at the counter, they already cancelled my booking.
In exchange, they can offer a bigger car for 600 €. There is no choice but to take it. I made a negotiation to get full coverage on the car by paying 200 € more.
so 800 € for 2 weeks, with full coverage.
With full coverage, we parked the rental car on the street more often. One day, we got a damage on the body while parking. We submit a report to the car hire and the police. Then it did not become a big problem.
We returned the car after 2 weeks, and later they charged additional 50 €.
Through E-mails and phone calls, we asked why they made additional charge… no answer, no reply, they don’t know, they will check…
After some months, we had a chance to visit the counter again at the same airport. We asked directly and finally they said “it was a cleaning fee”.
Who takes the rental car to car-wash service before returning it? Interior was clean, Exterior was a little dirty I knew because of the outside parking.
Isn’t it included in your service to wash your car after one customer before the next customer?
At least, it is in Japan. I have never received a rental car with its windshield full of dead mosquitos, remaining the sign of last user driving night time before returning the car.
Book and make a contract directly with car hire. Try to avoid Brokers unless you do not speak the local language and they do not directly provide English web page.
